Port to Port Archive: Journal Making

By Sabrina Fay

The journals of the past couple Port to Port classes have been sleek, black, and leatherbound, much like what most people picture when they think of the word journal. But in the earlier years of the class, they have much more closely resembled scrapbooks, made up of huge, threaded-together panels with ribbons and fabric woven through. Creating these journals was a simultaneously delightful and tedious experience; the trial and error of students, as well as their finished products, is depicted in the photos below.

Craftsmanship

A lesson well-learned for these students!

Artistry

Many students created drawings/paintings for their journals

The Finished Product

The final journals compiled all the student's materials together, with their own personal flair added, often including a personal not to the future reader of the journal and pages about current events or specific field trips.
