There is perhaps no time of the year more beautiful in New England than fall. With the crisp chill of winter palpable in the air, it's been difficult for the Port to Port class to find time to venture out to the port. But this Monday, they were able to do so, travelling all the way to the State Pier and making an incredible discovery: art!
The class happened upon various art pieces installed in the pier parking lot, a little known nook of creativity nestled amongst and integrated with the bustle of the port. It allowed Heidi Eastman to further drive home her points about the intersection of discovery and imagination that occurs at ports, an intersection the students were all too happy to directly interact with.
While at the pier, Heidi also pointed out the incoming ships and asked the students about what they figured they may carry. When discussing shipments of clementines, Heidi told the group about how there used to be only two shipments of clementines to New Bedford each year, but there is now a new batch coming into port every week! Amidst discussions of urban development, trade, sculpture and economics, the students got to see autumn in full swing and the eternally energetic city buzzing with activity despite the lowered temperatures.
